Starting Preschool at Two: How Settling In Works
Emine Çengelci

"My child is two. Is that too early for nursery or preschool?" It is one of the questions we hear most. The right answer depends on the child and the family, but at any age a well-planned settling-in period makes everything easier.
What does a two-year-old need at school?
At this age children explore the world with their hands and through movement. They want to do things themselves: the "I can do it!" stage has begun. When school offers a safe, calm and predictable setting, that wish becomes a powerful way to learn.
- A child-sized room: a cubby they can reach for their shoes, a washbasin at their height.
- Few, familiar adults: seeing the same faces every day builds trust.
- Rhythm: arrival, play, lunch and rest in the same order each day.
Settling in, step by step
1. Get to know the school together
The first day should not be the first visit. Before starting, go together, see the garden and the classroom, and meet the teacher.
2. Start with short days
In the first days the child stays an hour or two, and the time grows a little each day. The child's reactions, not the family calendar, set the pace.
3. Keep goodbyes short and clear
Tell your child you are leaving, give a hug and go. Slipping away unnoticed may seem easier but it undermines trust. Using the same goodbye words each day teaches the child what will happen.
4. Bring a piece of home
A small favourite toy or a family photo works well as a comfort object in the first weeks.
5. Accept that tears are normal
Crying at separation shows your child is attached to you; it is not a warning sign. What matters is that the teacher can soothe the child quickly and keeps you informed during the day.
6. Keep the rhythm at home
Children with regular sleep and mealtimes settle more easily. Try to keep school-day evenings calm.
How long does it take?
Some children settle within days, others need a few weeks. Small setbacks after holidays or illness are normal too. Talking regularly with the teacher helps you see how your child is doing.
Settling in should be the school adapting to the child, not only the child adapting to school.
